The Transportation Landscape in 2014

Written by Michael Melwicks | Jan 30, 2014 9:10:48 PM

As 2014 has arrived and January is already coming to a close, it is often wise to take a look at the industry trends and expectations for the calendar year. With climate change being a hot topic and the uncertainty of the economy always on everyone’s mind, the best way to secure your future is to be prepared. Our position in the market offers a unique window into the industry, and in an effort to pass along as much value through to our customers, friends and colleagues, here are a few of the items that we see affecting the trucking industry in 2014.

Emissions
Climate change and greenhouse gases have been an issue for politicians and environmentalists in both Canada and the United States for years now. The standards and regulations have changed and the trucking industry has needed to change with it. Biodiesel is now the new standard across Canada and you should expect to see its continued rise to prominence throughout this year. Truck owners are encouraged to ensure that their vehicles are maintained to adhere to their country’s emission standards and that the maximum performance is harnessed from this fuel type.

Economy
As Canadian and American economies continue through their period of recovery, analysts indicate moderate growth through the short-term. As the trucking industry plays a critical role in the transportation of goods, the industry overall is optimistic. While there are many factors to consider, keep an eye on the exchange rate while making cross border decisions. Growth is good, but make sure you are up to date on any changes that could affect your businesses profitability.

Driver Availability
As the trucking industry is expected to grow, so is the demand for drivers. With the amount of training and knowledge to become a driver, it is good to be prepared by having enough members to support your delivery schedule. Check your forecasts and outlooks for the year and make sure you have sufficient drivers because they may be hard to come by in the near future.

While there are no guarantees for the year, the best thing to do is be prepared. Stay up to date on industry changes. If you are preparing for your 2014 freight needs, request a free quote or contact Moto Transportation at 1-604-757-2441 for more information.
